Self-promotion and branding are huge for hairstylists. It wasn’t always like this, but with the rise of social media and technology taking over, more and more people will look you up online before they even consider booking an appointment with you. How do you want your future clients to perceive you? What kind of stylist are you? I am going to go through a few ‘rules of thumb’ if you will for social media strategy and branding.


Let's talk about finding a Niche


As a beauty professional, finding your niche in the industry is important. When you start out, it can be tempting to offer every service under the sun to appeal to as many clients as possible. However, this approach can quickly become overwhelming and unsustainable.


It's important to take a step back and think about what you truly enjoy doing and what services you excel at. This can involve experimenting with different techniques and services until you find what works best for you. It's also important to pay attention to what services your clients are most interested in and what sets you apart from other beauty professionals.


For me, it took some time to figure out my niche in the industry. I hold a variety of certifications and wanted to be the best at every method, but I quickly realized that trying to do everything was not sustainable or enjoyable. After some reflection, I decided to focus on the services that I truly enjoyed and excelled at: balayage and other natural-looking color techniques.


It's also important to be honest with yourself about what services don't spark joy. For me, fashion colors and perming were two services that I didn't enjoy as much. While it's important to be open to trying new things, it's also important to recognize when a certain service is not the right fit for you or your business.

Once you have found your niche, it's important to communicate this to your clients and potential clients. This can involve updating your website and social media profiles to highlight your areas of expertise and what sets you apart from other beauty professionals. By focusing on your strengths and what you truly enjoy doing, you can attract clients who are looking for high-quality services that are tailored to their individual needs.
