Entering the beauty industry comes with its fair share of challenges, both in terms of talent and mental fortitude. In this blog post, I will delve into the obstacles I've faced in the beauty industry, focusing on two categories: mental challenges and skill development. Let's dive in and explore the highs and lows of my journey.

Battling Imposter Syndrome

One of the most significant mental challenges I've encountered is imposter syndrome. It's disheartening when people question my career choices, suggesting that being a hairstylist couldn't possibly be my ultimate goal. Despite having a four-year degree and previous experience in the corporate world, I find myself defending my passion. It's perplexing how others fail to acknowledge that hairstyling is a legitimate career path. This questioning can undermine one's confidence and create self-doubt, but I've learned to rise above it.

Another instance where imposter syndrome creeps in is when setting prices as a salon owner. Despite carefully calculating the costs, there's always a nagging worry about whether I'm charging enough. However, I've come to realize that my expertise, years of experience, and skill level warrant the prices I set. Recognizing my worth and embracing the concept of "knowing my worth, then adding tax" has been empowering.

The Pitfall of Social Media

Comparison is a constant struggle in the beauty industry, amplified by the presence of social media. It's easy to feel inadequate when observing other stylists' seemingly amazing achievements, especially when we started our careers at the same time. But I've come to understand that each stylist's journey is unique, influenced by different resources, networking opportunities, and skills. Embracing my own worth and acknowledging my individuality has been the key to finding my path and succeeding in the industry.

Embracing Change and Mastering Techniques

The beauty industry is ever-evolving, with new trends and techniques emerging constantly. Trying something new and failing miserably is a common occurrence. However, the ability to adapt and course-correct without breaking a sweat is essential. It's all about embracing the challenges and learning from them.

For me, the most demanding technique to master was balayage. Achieving a seamless, soft balayage without any spots or harsh lines was a daunting task in the past. I attended numerous classes, endured trial-and-error situations, and persisted until I mastered it. With practice, I transformed balayage into my comfort zone and even began experimenting with my own techniques.

The beauty industry has tested my talents and mental resilience, but I've learned valuable lessons along the way. Overcoming imposter syndrome and embracing my worth has been crucial part of my journey. By understanding that comparison is futile and each stylist has their own unique path, I've found my own boss vibes and flourished. Skill-wise, I've faced challenges, but with determination and practice, I've mastered techniques like balayage and even ventured into creating my own.

Remember, the beauty industry is ever-changing, and there will always be new trends to explore and conquer. By continuously learning, adapting, and pushing our boundaries, we can stay at the forefront of this dynamic field.

Thank you for joining me on this insightful journey through the challenges and triumphs of the beauty industry. I hope my experiences have inspired you to embrace your passion and overcome any obstacles that come your way.

Until next time,

xo, Annique L.
